Japanese Business Meetings

Discuss these questions with your partner first, then watch the video and answer the comprehension questions.

What do you think you need to do in a Japanese business meeting regarding:

  • bowing or shaking hands?
  • where to sit?
  • taking and giving business cards?
  • giving and receiving gifts?

How are these different from your own culture?

The video can be found on the Students Drive in the Business English folder. It is called "Conducting Yourself in a Japanese Business Meeting.mp4".

Comprehension Questions:

  1. What should you do: bow or shake? Why?
  2. Where should you sit in a meeting? Why?
  3. What should you do with a business card you've been given? Why?
  4. What should you do about giving gifts? Why?

Your turn:

The video you just watched was about 215 words long and talked about 4 areas of doing business in Japan. Please write an introduction to doing business in your country describing four areas as well. They don't have to be the same four areas, but can include some or all of these areas. It should be about 200-250 words long. Also, pleases include some conditionals and some adverb clauses in the text. Once you are done, another classmate is going to read your text and comment on it. You are to make changes according to those comments and then your teacher will comment on it and you will make those changes. Finally, you will do an audio recording of the text and will post the link to your site along with the text.

Peer-assessment:

Grammar and spelling

  • Are there any grammar areas that the student needs to fix? What areas are they? Don't fix the problems for them, just tell them what type of mistakes they are making (e.g. "You have some article mistakes." or "Use the first conditional instead of the second.")
  • Are there any spelling mistakes? Which words are they? Don't fix the spelling, just mention the words that are spelled incorrectly (e.g. "You spelled wurst incorrectly.")
  • Did the writer use the two conditionals? Are they used correctly?
  • Did the writer use adverb clauses? Are they used correctly?

Content

  • Does the text have four topics?
  • Does it have an introduction and conclusion?
  • Are there any areas that are unclear? What are they?

Comments

  • What did you like best about this text?
  • Do you have any suggestions?
