Hiring: Listening

Post all answers to your personal page.

Listen to the audio the first time and put these things in order as they are mentioned:

  • Doing a cost/benefit analysis of hiring a new employee.
  • The number of jobs added in one month.
  • The differences in hiring a new person for a large company versus a small company.
  • Having to lay off a large number of staff.

Listen again for these details:

  • The unemployment rate.
  • The number of employees they presently have.
  • The number of employees they want to hire.
  • The number of employees they had before.
  • The number of employees they had to layoff.
  • The reason they are hiring someone now.
  • The things they had to look at when calculating the cost of hiring a new person.

Look at these two sentences from the listening. What English verb tense are they? Why is this tense used and not another? What time are they talking about?
